Ukraine has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire with Russia. This was announced by Ukraine at a meeting with mediators in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday. Now whether there will be a ceasefire or not depends on Russia.

After Ukraine agreed to the ceasefire, Moscow said on Wednesday that they would make a decision after learning more about it from the mediating country, the US. However, Reuters reported, citing multiple Russian sources, that they believe that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not agree to it.

Donald Trump took the initiative to end the war in Ukraine after being sworn in as US president on January 20. But the situation took a different turn after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House at the end of last month. The Trump administration suspended military aid to Ukraine. However, now that Ukraine has agreed to a ceasefire, the suspension has been lifted.

After the Ukraine ceasefire agreement, the United States and its Western allies are saying that the ball is now in Russia's court. Whether Moscow agrees to a ceasefire or not will tell us whether they want peace or not.

Regarding the agreement to a ceasefire in Ukraine, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters yesterday, "It now depends entirely on Russia. Whether they say yes or no, that is the question to be seen. If Russia agrees, that would be very good news. And if that is the case, we will start the next step. We will do everything we can to move this peace process forward."

The US Secretary of State also said, "If Russia does not agree, then we will certainly consider everything. We will try to understand what they want. If they do not say, that will give us an idea of ​​their intentions. We will also understand what they want.’

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a post on social media X today, ‘This plan for a 30-day ceasefire is a very important step towards restoring peace in Ukraine. Now it depends on Putin.’

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov spoke to reporters yesterday about Ukraine’s proposal for a ceasefire. He said that they are waiting to hear from the United States about the details of Ukraine’s proposed ceasefire.

Peskov said, ‘We expect that Secretary of State Rubio and US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz will contact us through various channels in the coming days. We will be informed about the ongoing talks and the agreements reached in the talks.’ Asked whether Moscow would agree to a ceasefire, he said, ‘You are asking for an answer to this question ahead of time.’

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that constructive talks had taken place between US and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia. If a possible 30-day ceasefire is reached, then work could begin on drafting a large-scale peace agreement during this time.
