The United States submitted a new 65-word resolution to the UN on Friday on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. It did not mention the territory of Ukraine occupied by Russia. It did not condemn the Russian attack. On the same day, Ukraine and its European allies also submitted a separate resolution to the UN.
The UN General Assembly will vote on the two resolutions next Monday (February 24). This day marks the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called his resolution "plain and historic" and urged UN members to support it.
Top US and Russian officials recently met in Riyadh to end the Ukraine war. Ukraine was not invited to the meeting. US President Donald Trump said that the presence of a Ukrainian representative in the peace talks was "not important." The conflict between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reached an extreme level.
Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, called the US proposal a "good step." However, he said it did not address the "root causes" of the conflict.
The proposal by Ukraine and its European allies emphasizes redoubled diplomatic efforts to end the war by this year. It outlines some of the steps that could be taken to end it. The proposal condemns Russia and calls for the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

The proposal also refers to an older resolution on the Ukraine war that was passed by the UN General Assembly in October 2022 with 143 votes. The resolution demanded the immediate withdrawal of all Russian troops from the occupied territory of Ukraine.
