Sophia Qureshi, Colonel Madhya Pradesh BJP leader and minister Vijay Shah has found himself in trouble for insulting Indian Army Colonel Sophia Qureshi, who was participating in a regular briefing during 'Operation Sandor' against Pakistan. The Madhya Pradesh High Court's Justices Atul Sridharan and Anuradha Shukla have mandated the filing of an FIR against the state minister. After the High Court's order yesterday, on Wednesday, the state Chief Minister Mohan Yadav X said that the police have been asked to take action against Tribal Welfare Minister Vijay Shah.
Vijay Shah filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Thursday seeking a stay on the Madhya Pradesh High Court's order. According to his lawyer's plea, the minister has apologized. He was misunderstood. His comments were misinterpreted in the media.
Chief Justice B. R. Gavai and Justice A. G. Masih, without granting a stay order, said that they will hear the petition today. Before that, the petitioner for a stay order can approach the High Court.
The Chief Justice commented, ‘A person with constitutional status has to be responsible. He needs to know what he is saying when he is saying it, especially when the country is in such a situation.’
Everyone, regardless of party affiliation, is criticizing Vijay Shah. There is a demand for his dismissal from the cabinet, not only from the opposition Congress but also from the state BJP leadership.
Two High Court judges yesterday ordered the police to file an FIR, saying that what Minister Vijay Shah said, referring to Colonel Sophia, is ‘sewer language, dangerous and cancer-like.’ The judges said that such comments by the minister will incite people to increase hostility between the majority and minority communities, cause violence, and destroy harmony.
The Ministry of Defence and External Affairs held regular briefings following the Indian Army's launch of Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam massacre. Indian Army Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Air Force Wing Commander Byomika Singh participated in those briefings. Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishri was with them.
Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Madhya Pradesh BJP leader and minister Vijay Shah
Regarding the decision to send Colonel Sophia Qureshi for the briefing, Minister Vijay Shah said in a meeting, ‘We have punished the attackers using the sister (Sophia) of the person who wiped the vermilion off our mothers and sisters (the gunmen). They (the gunmen) took off their clothes and selectively killed Hindus. Modiji has taught them a lesson by using their sister (Sophia). They have been ruined by him. Vijay Shah’s comment went viral in an instant. Calling Colonel Sophia Qureshi a ‘sister of the armed group’ immediately sparked a storm of protest and condemnation. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge single-handedly told the BJP leadership to expel Vijay Shah from the cabinet and the party immediately.
Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari said, ‘Vijay Shah has insulted the army and our sisters. He has insulted. But the BJP is silent.’
"It is unfortunate that some responsible people are making such derogatory comments against women," National Commission for Women Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote in X. Such comments are insulting not only the women's community but also the women who are protecting the security of the countr’y.
To handle the situation, several state BJP leaders went to the house of Colonel Sophia Qureshi’s relative living in Bhopal. The embarrassed BJP leadership also called Vijay Shah and warned him. Under pressure from party leaders, Vijay Shah apologized repeatedly, but the matter was not resolved.
Yesterday, after the strong criticism of two High Court judges and the order to file an FIR, the BJP state leadership wavered. The Chief Minister herself announced that she would take action. The police also filed an FIR. In this situation, the demand for Vijay Shah's dismissal from the cabinet has become strong.
A section of extremist Hindutva activists could not accept the ceasefire decision. This group also used social media to mock Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishri and his lawyer daughter after announcing the ceasefire. They abused them. The administration officials' organization also issued a statement condemning this behavior.
Referring to such behavior, Congress President Khagde said that RSS and BJP have always been anti-women. That is why their followers first trolled the wife of the Navy officer killed in Pahalgam on social media. Then the daughter of Vikram Mishri. Now they have insulted Colonel Sophia Qureshi, but the Prime Minister is speechless.
